In the farewell salute, brig. gen. Luigi De Leonibus thanked all those present, underlining the opportunity he had, as the summit of Italian meteorology in the years spent at USAM, to have contributed to ensuring that the Armed Force is considered a national and international point of reference in the meteorological field, carrying out with the utmost commitment his duties in both the military and civilian fields. He concluded by wishing the new department head every success.
The col. Leonardo Musmanno first of all thanked the leaders of the Air Force for the trust shown in him. He then expressed great motivation in taking on a position in which he hopes to be able to better serve the country and the Armed Force, in a period of complex transformations, which are also affecting the meteorology sector. To achieve these objectives, the colonel said he was certain of the effective and loyal collaboration of all the staff of the USAM.
The air brigadier general Roberto Cattaneo wanted to address words of appreciation and gratitude for the work done and the results achieved towards the brig. gen. De Leonibus; he also congratulated col. Leonardo Musmanno for the new assignment, confident that he will be able to carry it out in the best possible way, thanks to the preparation and experience gained in the aeronautical and inter-force fields.

The Airspace and Meteorology General Office (SMA USAM), through the Meteorology Department, has the mission of supporting the Chief of Staff of the Air Force in the functions of high technical management, regulation, certification, supervision and control on the subject of general meteorology and aeronautics. Specifically, it provides for the management, technical-scientific development, regulation, certification and control of the activities, systems and procedures of observation, centralization, production and dissemination of meteorological data and products as well as training and personnel qualification activities. . It also promotes the development of meteorology at national level and maintains the necessary coordination with the European and international meteorological services, with the Civil Protection and the meteorological structures of the Administrative Regions. The head of the Meteorology Department of SMA USAM is also delegated by Mr. CaSMA to represent Italy in International Meteorological Organizations such as the World Meteorological Organization, the Meteorological Space Agency EUMETSAT and the European Center for Medium-Term Forecasting (ECMWF).
The col. GArn Leonardo Musmanno was born in Castrovillari, province of Cosenza, the 20 April 1961. He graduated in Physics with honors in the 1985 and is enrolled in the Air Force from the 13 October 1986.
He attended the 6th Course of the Higher Institute of Joint Staff at the CASD, the XNUMXnd level Master in international strategic-military studies and the one in management of materials and their complex systems; he is a qualified legal advisor in international humanitarian law.
During his career as an officer he has held positions both in meteorology, at the National Center of Meteorology and Climatology Aeronautics (CNMCA) of Pratica di Mare and the Regional Meteorological Center (CMR) of Brindisi, and in the defense space sector, as deputy head of 3 ° Space Policy Office SMA PIANI and Head of the Space Programs Section of SMD IV (Chairman of the Special Committee for the Space Defense programs).
The last position held was, from 3 June 2013, that of Head of the Cooperation and Certification Office of the Meteorology Department of SMA USAM.
The col. Musmanno is married and has two children.
