Somalia: the European mission forms military genius

In recent days, 24 officers and non-commissioned officers of the Somali National Army (SNA), have successfully completed a four-week training course, in which they acquired the knowledge and basic skills typical of military genius such as setting a defensive position and building obstacles for tactical maneuvers, as well as technical and tactical procedures to counter the threat arising from the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The military, all belonging to the 32 ° engineering battalion, recognizing the high value of the training, have shown a high motivation during all the phases of the 1 ° Military Engineering Course.

The authorities intervened
The closing ceremony, held on 17 February at the "General Dhagabadan Training Center" (GDTC) in Mogadishu, was attended by the head of the Engineering Department of the SNA, Brigadier General Omar Jama, the commander of the GDTC, Brigadier General Mohamed Mohamud Saney, the commander of the 32 ° engineering battalion, with the. Ahmed Shire Warsame and deputy commander of the European Union Training Mission Somalia (EUTM-S), col. Richard Gray, who positively evaluated the work done by the military of the armed forces of the mission.

Fifth mission mandate in Somalia
The training course of military genius is part of the fifth mandate of EUTM-Somalia, which provides training for organic units, unlike what happened with the previous mandate that instead provided for individual training.

The national contribution to the EUTM-S mission
Since 2010, the European Union has conducted a military training mission called EUTM Somalia, aimed at contributing to the strengthening of the Somali Federal Government. Italy contributes 123 soldiers and 20 vehicles from our Armed Forces to supply Training, Mentoring e Advising at the political and strategic level with the aim of increasing the capabilities of the Somali national armed forces. From 1 July 2017 the mission is placed under the command of gen. b. Pietro Addis.
