The Navy destroyer "Caio Duilio" carried out the handover with the frigate "Federico Martinengo", engaged in the Red Sea in ensuring maritime surveillance and protecting merchant units in transit to guarantee the freedom of trade routes.
The activity, launched following attacks by Houthi militiamen against traffic sailing in the Bab-el Mandeb Strait, is aimed at guaranteeing the protection of national interests in the crucial maritime communication route accessing the Mediterranean Sea.
From next February 11th the frigate "Martinengo" will take on the task of flag unit of "Atalanta", the European Union Mission to combat piracy.
