Nave Doria flagship of the NATO operation "Sea Guardian"

The destroyer Andrea Doria of the Navy, has just concluded its first week of participation in the Naval Group of NATO engaged in the maritime operation Sea Guardian, as the command vessel of the 440.03 Task Group.

The operation Sea Guardian, born after the Warsaw Summit in 2016, aims to increase coordination between the activities of NATO and those of the European Union conducted with the EUNAVFORMED operation Sophia in the Mediterranean, in order to improve European defense and collective security by ensuring greater synergies and exploiting the peculiarities of each organization. It is a highly flexible operation, capable of ensuring a wide range of operational maritime security tasks including the surveillance of maritime areas of interest and the fight against maritime terrorism while ensuring training for the security forces of the coastal countries ( Maritime Security Capacity-Building). In addition to these activities, the Operation can exert maritime interdiction, protection of freedom of navigation, protection of sensitive maritime infrastructures and the fight against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

As part of a patrolling activity, Nave's boarding team last November 27 Doria, conducted a consensual visit on board an Egyptian fishing vessel, part of a small fleet of four fishing vessels. The Italian team then compared and exchanged information with the commander of the vehicle and the crew of theAndrea Doria it has also provided technical support for the resolution of a failure related to the system for launching the nets of the fishing vessel.

The DDG destroyer Andrea Doria (D553), belongs to the class of naval units named Horizon which includes the sister unit, the DDG destroyer Caio Duilio (D 554), and two units of the French Navy (Forbin e Chevalier Paul).
