The scientific research activity called “High North 17” was presented today at the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy, which will take place from 9 to 29 July in the Arctic Ocean, near the Svalbard Islands.

With the campaign High North 17 the Navy and the Hydrographic Institute return to the Arctic seas to conduct scientific research after 89 years from the exploits of Commander Nobile.

During the campaign, on board the Alliance ship, there will be researchers from the main national research institutions, such as CNR (National Research Council), OGS (National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics) and ENEA (Agenzia National for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development) and international researchers of the Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (BORN).

The Navy with the aid of platforms and tools for research in the marine environment of the Istituto Idrografico (IIM) will contribute to improving knowledge on the evolution of that marine environment to better ensure safety and the free use of resources. In particular, the completion of the geophysical framework with the data collected with the High North 2017 will be able to provide useful elements of evaluation in multiple sectors, not least the climate.

The planned activities will take place mainly in the fields of Geophysics, Marine Geology, seabed characterization and physical Oceanography, as well as integrated atmosphere and optical measurements.
