GPS IIF-7 in orbit

03/08/14

A Global Positioning System (GPS) IIF satellite was launched yesterday and sent signals to the controllers confirming the smooth functioning within the constellation that supports millions of people for navigation.

The GPS IIF-7 was embarked on an Atlas-5 rocket from Cape Canaveral, it is the seventh of 12 that Boeing has built for the US Air Force and the third put into orbit this year.

Boeing and the Air Force will complete the final satellite orbit verification next month.

The "GPS IIF" offer greater signal accuracy, better anti-jamming capability, longer system life and the new L5 civil signal.

The IIF-8 GPS, which is scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter, came to Cape Canaveral on July 16 to undergo preparations for the launch.
