With these words Colonel Vincenzo Sicuso, commander of the airport and of the 41 Stormo Antisom of Sigonella, on Thursday 24 December greeted his crew about to take off, on board the BR-1150 Atlantic aircraft of the Italian Air Force, to carry out activities operating in the Mediterranean, for the surveillance and safeguarding of maritime safety.
The activity of the Atlantic, in fact, continued without interruption even during the period of the festivities, affecting the patrolling of vast sea areas to the south and east of Sicily. Through the use of all the sensors available to the aircraft and according to precise tactics of use, the crew continued to carry out the scheduled checks on the boats in transit in order to increase the level of safety at sea, both for the ship and for human life.

The 41 ° Stormo Antisom of Sigonella, with the supplied Breguet 1150 Atlantic aircraft, guarantees its primary mission consisting in countering the underwater and naval threat and in providing long-range search and rescue service keeping under control, for protection of the main sea routes, the potentially hostile underwater and surface naval units. Furthermore, it ensures the control of merchant traffic, in the context of operations against international terrorism, and support for activities aimed at controlling illegal immigration flows from the southern quadrants of the Mediterranean. In this sense, Atlantic is able to independently conduct systematic research throughout the Mediterranean, ensuring the coverage of large areas of sea of interest, allowing the timely location of refugees at sea and alerting the relevant bodies and guaranteeing the at the same time a constant and prompt SAR (search and rescue) intervention in the event of a maritime accident and shipwreck.
