Urgent medical transport for renal transplantation

On the evening of Tuesday 10 March the Situation Room of the Air Squad Command alerted the Operations Room of Ciampino's 31 ° Stormo, ordering the immediate execution of a hospital flight in favor of a man in imminent danger of life.

The mission involved a first stopover in Naples Capodichino to embark a patient of 44 years, suffering from chronic renal failure in the terminal phase, for which a compatible organ was made available at the Transplant Center in Pisa. The man had to reach the Center no later than six hours after the call and traveled with the support of health support equipment.

After a stop of only five minutes at the Neapolitan airport, the Falcon 50 of the 31 ° Stormo then left with the patient on board for the Pisa San Giusto airport where it landed at 22:30 local time, allowing compliance with the restrictions timing necessary for the Transplant Center to proceed with the intervention.

The aircraft of the 31 ° Stormo of Ciampino are used for State Transport and for public utility missions such as the medical transport of sick, severely traumatized and transplant organs, as well as for interventions in favor of compatriots, however, in situations of risk. This last activity, given the imminent danger of life of the patients transported, imposes a level of readiness twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

Since the beginning of 2015, the Air Force aircraft have carried out numerous flights to transport patients in need of urgent care, often in imminent danger of life, throughout the national territory, in particular in favor of the islands. In addition to the Falcon of the 31 ° Stormo (F50 and F900), constantly engaged in this type of activity, the contribution of the C130s of the 46 ^ Air Brigade, capable of embarking also ambulances, in cases where the patient needs a particular support, as well as the helicopters of the 15 ° Stormo CSAR (Combat Search and Rescue), characterized by a great versatility of use. From the beginning of the year to today, the AM fleet has totaled over 270 flight hours for this type of needs.
