19/03/15

At 13: around today 00, at the military airport of Trapani-Birgi, a prototype P.1HH remote-controlled aircraft of Piaggio Aerospace, due to a technical-operational event, left the runway during taxiing tests for the evaluation of ground handling characteristics.

The aircraft has finished its run in the lawn surrounding the runway, without reporting any significant damage.

The track was temporarily closed in light of the safety regulations in force. There is no damage to people or things on the ground.

Civil air traffic was diverted to Palermo airport.

The event occurred during an authorized and scheduled activity, as part of the planned development and testing phases of the system by Piaggio, to which the Air Force is providing technical-logistical support at the airport level.

At the 15.30 the airport runway was reopened to air traffic.

The aircraft P.1HH "HammerHead" is an aircraft capable of automatic take-off and landing (ATOL Automatic Take Off and Landing) which is positioned in the high end of the MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) remote piloted aircraft. The system is developed by Piaggio Aerospace and is the result of an intergovernmental program approved by agreements between Italy and the United Arab Emirates (owners of the majority Piaggio package).
