Mediterranean Security: the contribution of the Air Force

The number of interventions carried out during national maritime surveillance missions in the Mediterranean is growing.

The latest activity in chronological order saw the crews of the 41 ° Stormo Antisom of the Aeronautica Militare di Sigonella engaged who, using the Breguet Atlantic aircraft, located several boats with numerous people on board in a vast area of ​​sea south east of the Sicily.

The Atlantic patrol activity aimed above all at avoiding dangerous situations for the occupants of the boats and at monitoring any other anomalies in the surrounding area to allow the intervention of rescuers.

The 41 ° Stormo Antisom of Sigonella among its tasks has, in fact, that of guaranteeing support for activities aimed at controlling illegal immigration flows from the southern quadrants of the Mediterranean.

In addition, it ensures daily - thanks to Atlantic's ability to autonomously conduct systematic searches throughout the Mediterranean - the coverage of large sea areas of interest, allowing the timely localization of refugees at sea and alerting the bodies in charge, guaranteeing at the same time, constant and prompt SAR (search and rescue) intervention in the event of a maritime accident and shipwreck.
