New "radome" for 21 ° Gr.RAM radar

19/07/14

On Tuesday 8 July, the final positioning of the new Radhe Lockheed Martin AN / TPS21 117D Long Range protective radome was completed at the 3 ° Radar Group of the Italian Air Force (Gr.RAM) of Poggio Ballone (GR) to the base.

The radome consists of a sphere with a truncated base about 14 meters high and composed of polygonal panels in composite material for a total weight of almost 8 tons. The structure prevents possible damage deriving from atmospheric agents allowing the continuity of operation of the radar in extreme climatic conditions. The interior is equipped with a series of safety systems including those dedicated to monitoring temperatures, preventing fires and condensation, as well as removing deposits of atmospheric precipitation.

The works are part of the technical specifications of a contract - managed by the IT Department, Telematics and Advanced Technologies (TELEDIFE) in coordination with the air force - which concerns similar interventions at a series of radar sites of the national air defense.
