Meteorology and Agriculture: the Air Force present at the Coldiretti Village of San Benedetto del Tronto

From Friday 14 to Sunday 16 July, the Italian Air Force took part, with a stand of its Meteorological Service, in the Coldiretti Village set up in San Benedetto del Tronto. Over two hundred thousand visitors have visited the Village, made up of over 200 stands, including an exhibition area dedicated to the Armed Forces and State Corps. 

Numerous enthusiasts, but also the simply curious, children and teenagers who entertained themselves to admire the videos of the Centenary celebration events and learn about the activities of the Istituto della Forza Armata and those specific to the Meteorological Service.

On this occasion, the Air Force presented its activities to the public by making use of the display of various instruments, equipment and sensors, also emphasizing the significant contribution made in monitoring greenhouse gases in the atmosphere for the purpose of studying climate change. 

In particular, the public was able to appreciate the importance of meteorology also through its correlation with agriculture. Among the topics touched upon, the impact that meteorological events have not only on people's daily lives but also on most agronomic events: meteorological and climatic conditions, rainfall and irradiation can favor the growth and development of plants or, sometimes, in the event of extreme phenomena (heavy rainfall, hailstorms, frosts, drought, etc.), negatively affect the good performance of the agri-food industry as well as its crops.

Among the numerous meteorological instruments, the classic ones were exhibited, which represent the history of terrestrial and high-altitude meteorological observations, as well as the latest generation ones. Great interest was aroused by the field meteorological station, operational and able to provide objective answers to the sensation of a very high temperature perceived throughout the event, showing the high temperature and humidity values ​​in real time. 

The promotion and coordination of the initiative were handled byGeneral Office of Military Aviation and Meteorology of the General Staff of the Air Force, while the management of the stand was handled by a team made up of personnel from weather service of the general staff of the air squadron command, of the 4th Telecommunications and Systems Brigade for Air Defense and Flight Assistance of Borgo Piave, and of the 15th flock of Cervia, as well as by staff of the Aviation English training centre of Loreto for the dissemination of general information on the Armed Forces.
