Two fighters Euro Fighter of the 36th wing of Gioia del Colle took off this morning to carry out an aerial interception following an immediate take-off order, in technical jargon Scramble.

The order was given by NATO via the combined air operation centre (CAOC) of Torrejon (Spain), in coordination with the aerospace operations command (COA) of Poggio Renatico and the Armed Forces bodies responsible for surveillance of the national airspace, in order to carry out the visual identification (VID) of an aircraft of the Canadian company Air Transat which had lost radio contact with the air traffic authorities.

The two interceptor fighters of the 36th wing, under the guidance of the personnel of the 22nd Integrated Missile Air Defense Group of Licola (Na), were authorized to carry out supersonic activity in order to reach the aircraft as quickly as possible, coming from Montreal and headed for Athens.

The aircraft then restored radio contact with the air traffic control authorities and was able to proceed regularly towards the scheduled destination.
