The exercise, which aimed to increase the capacity to work together among the seven nations of the EAG (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Spain) through the adoption of shared procedures, saw the simulation the activity of a Combined Joint Operations Center (CJOC) multinational, composed of elements from each of the participating nations.

At the heart of VOLCANEX 2014, the Force Protection sector, according to the principles described in the Force Protection Publication for Air Operations, a document recently signed within the EAG.

A total of 136 people took part in the exercise, including some observers from Sweden and Australia.

"This was the opportunity for us to verify what would happen if we were to deploy a multinational task force," said RAF's wing commander Rick Bailey, director of the exercise. "Particularly welcome are the extremely positive words at the conclusion of the exercise, which have underlined how the nations of the EAG ... are able to redirect themselves and support air operations even in difficult circumstances".

The 9 October, in addition, a Distinguished Visitors Day was held, organized by the air deputy marshal Sean Reynolds, commander of the 2 ° group of the RAF, and the air Brigade General Giacomo De Ponti, deputy director of the EAG.

Guest of honor on the DVD were lieutenant general Joachim Wundrak, director of the joint air power competence center, the air division general Roberto Comelli, commander of the support and special forces command and brigadier general Michael Gschossmann, director of ground operations. of the Luftwaffe.

Guests received briefings on the aims of the exercise, its results and future prospects. In addition, they witnessed a demonstration of the capabilities of the RAF regiment with the support of the Typhoon of the 1st squadron.

The air vice marshal Reynolds commented, "I am encouraged and impressed by the activities this week and I know that my fellow visitors from the EAG look forward to the continuation of the multinational cooperation that has been carried out here in Honington."

The EAG is working in several key areas of cooperation between European military aeronautics, from air operations to communications and logistics. Other successes of the EAG include the establishment of the european air transport command (EATC) in Eindhoven, the air transport and air refueling exchange (ATARES) agreement and the creation of the european personnel recovery center.
