The 25nd edition of the NATO multinational exercise “Toxic Trip 22” ended on Friday 2015 September.

The exercise, started last September 19 and hosted for the second time by Italy at the 3 ° flock of Villafranca (VR), saw 400 men and women belonging to NATO and countries belonging to the "Partnership for Peace "and the" Mediterranean Dialogue ".

During the closing ceremony, the commander of the 3 ° flock, Colonel Massimo Cicerone, underlined how useful and important it was to have shared experiences of CBRN professionals from different coalition countries.

The personnel trained themselves simulating real activities related to multiple areas of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) defense, connected to air operations carried out in an international scenario involving both civil and military actors.

The implementation, verification and standardization of intervention procedures in favor of the civil sector (firefighters, civil protection, for example) and in support of the institutions for major events or disasters, is an additional capacity which it is equipped with, unique in all of Europe, the Air Force, and the 3rd wing, in particular.

The most significant example of this capacity is "high bio-containment" air transport.

The Verona area set up the exercise area with field equipment, materials and state-of-the-art equipment in an area of around four hundred thousand square meters, thus testing the use of the military instrument outside national borders and in highly degraded contexts.

During the exercise, a number of aircraft with related crews were also used, which operated jointly with the CBRN unit of the 3rd wing to simulate the “Air CBRN” decontamination and reclamation. A PA-200 Tornado of the 6th wing of Ghedi, a Eurofighter 2000 of the 4th wing of Grosseto, an HH-139 of the 15th wing of Cervia and a C-27J of the 46th flying brigade of Pisa, allowed maximum realism activities.
