AM Hunting intervene in the Tyrrhenian on an unidentified aircraft

07/10/14

Today a helicopter off the coast of Ponza has triggered a "scramble" alarm due to lack of identification. The event activated the air defense system by launching the rapid take-off procedure for two Eurofighter fighters stationed at the Grosseto base, home of the 4 ° Stormo.

During the morning, the CAOC-TJ (Combined Air Operation Center of Torrejon), ordered the "scramble", ie the immediate take-off of interceptor fighter aircraft in alarm service on the national territory. Departed in a few minutes from Grosseto airport, the two Eurofighter fighters, in constant radio contact with the air defense radars ensured by the Italian Air Force, have passed under the control of the National Government Authority (NGA).

The interception was carried out in the stretch of sea between Sardinia and Campania at low speed at the altitude of 500 meters. Upon reaching the aircraft, visual identification was made and radio contact was established. The NGA, after having ascertained the absence of a threat to National security, gave the order to return to the base for the two Eurofighters of the 4 ° Stormo.
