Afghanistan: C27J JEDI returns to Italy

18/12/14

Last Sunday the operational use in the Afghan theater of the EC-27J JEDI (Jamming and Electronic Defense Instrumentation) aircraft of the Air Force for electronic warfare was terminated.

The event was sanctioned by a ceremony in which General Maurizio Angelo Scardino, commander of the Train Advise Assist Command West (TAAC-W), and Colonel Paolo Latini, commander of the Joint Air Task Force (JATF), greeted the " Ravens, "as the military operating in these specialized units are called.

The first EC-27J JEDI aircraft, commonly called JEDI, arrived in Herat in the 2012 and in the three years of activity in Afghanistan has supported more than 800 ISAF missions, for a total of over 2800 flight hours.

The use of the EC-27J JEDI proved to be a fundamental tool in all operations, given its fundamental tactical and strategic support, thanks to which it guaranteed a security framework in the areas of use, supporting the ISAF missions active on the whole Afghan territory, without solution of continuity, from Jalalabad to Herat and from Kandahar and Murghab.

The result achieved by the JEDI is the result of the experience acquired by the staff of the ReSTOGE (Electronic Warfare Technical Support Department), stationed at the 9th ISTAR-EW Air Brigade in Pratica di Mare (RM), together with the work of sailors and specialists of the 98th Flight Group of the 46th Pisa Air Brigade. A commitment that is fully part of the operational capabilities expressed by the Air Force in Afghanistan, which carried out the assigned missions with precision, in compliance with the rules of engagement to safeguard the Italian contingent, the coalition and the Afghan security forces.
