(To Application School)

Military history lesson on the battlefield of Marengo (AL) for the officers of the Army Application School. The one hundred and fourteen lieutenants of the 196 ° course "Certezza" took part in a battlefield tour, English term that indicates the visit to a real fighting site, organized by professor Giovanni Cerino Badone, university professor of military history and captain of the selected Army reserve.

In the place where Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the Austrian troops led by General Michael von Melas on 14 June 1800, the young officers were able to put into practice the notions of history, tactics and logistics learned at Palazzo Arsenale, confronting the reality of a real field of battle. Led by the holder of the history chair in the presence of teachers and commanders, the future Army cadres had an undoubtedly relevant training experience, which has its roots in the Anglo-Saxon military tradition and which still maintains its didactic value unchanged today.

After the observation of the battlefield of Marengo, still perfectly preserved today, the officers had the opportunity to visit the eighteenth-century Citadel of Alexandria, an extraordinary example of permanent fortification designed by Ignazio Bertola on the basis of the knowledge gained during the siege of Turin of 1706.

The reasoned study of military history, the multidisciplinary approach to the subject and the simultaneous opportunity to try their hand at solving current tactical problems constitute a precious training opportunity for young Army officers in which, at the Application School, they strongly believe.
