(To Alpine Troops Command)
01/09/17

A period of training at high altitude ended today, which saw the Alpine Army troops operate since 21 August on the Marmolada glacier - the largest in the Dolomites - on the border between Trentino and Veneto. Here, where the front line between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire ran, an exhausting war of position was fought 100 years ago, made even more bloody by the harshness of a hostile and prohibitive natural environment, which inflicted harsh losses to both sides.

A complex activity, essential in the field of training of peculiar specialties of Alpine troops to keep staff constantly updated and able to operate in an environment that requires high physical preparation, great mental balance and a high level of attention to minimize the risks that the mountain entails.

The Alpine troops, engaged in the conduct of progression and rescue maneuvers on frozen ground, also had to intervene with their own specialized personnel also to identify and report to the competent authorities some remnants of war (photo), dating back to World War I and re-surfaced dangerously on the surface at cause of ice melting. Specifically, these are three bombs - an artillery projectile and two hand grenades - found during training and for which it will be necessary to carry out specific neutralization and reclamation interventions in the future.

The correct conduct of the exercise was possible thanks to the support and coordination provided by the company Marmolada Srl
