Operation Sophia, the formation of the Libyan Navy continues

The activity took place on board two units of the operation Sophia by Eunavfor Med, the Italian Nave St. George and the Dutch Nave Rotterdam, to train the first instructors of the new Libyan navy / coast guard.

The first course was dedicated in particular to coastal and offshore navigation, the conduct of boats and patrol boats, telecommunications management, navigation law, Search and Rescue (SAR), first aid, maritime situational awareness, fishing supervision, fire fighting. and activities of boarding.

The second cycle involved transversal training activities that directly involve the Nave crew St. George. Training in the field of safety and safeguarding of human life at sea also continued, carried out by the personnel of the Corps of Port Authorities - Coast Guard.

This second training cycle is also the last that sees the Dutch ship engaged Rotterdam. From the next cycle all the activity will take place exclusively on board the ship St. George until the spring of 2017 when the first of the three training phases will end.

The activity aims to consolidate the capacity of the Libyan Navy / Coast Guard to regain control of the territorial seas and at the same time to counteract any form of illicit sea traffic.
