Statement by the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Italy on today's aggression by Azerbaijan

19/09/23

Today, Azerbaijan launched a massive unprovoked attack against Nagorno-Karabakh, targeting cities and civilians on a large scale. After imposing a total blockade, for about 9 months, subjecting the population of 120.000 Armenians to hunger and moral and psychological suffering, Azerbaijan is now deliberately targeting them for elimination.

This unprovoked aggression in Nagorno-Karabakh can only be described as mass atrocity. Azerbaijan is completely ignoring all previous efforts to stabilize the situation and related international appeals.

While the international community asks Azerbajan for the immediate opening of the Lachin corridor and proposes a dialogue mechanism between Stepanakert and Baku, the latter begins an attack of aggression against the population.

As before every attack, this time too, Azerbaijan started propaganda by spreading false news and blaming Armenian forces for attacking Azerbaijan's positions. These fake news were promptly denied by both Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh knowing that in this way Azerbaijan is preparing a new aggression.

A few days ago, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan openly declared that Azerbaijan is deploying its armed forces on the border with Armenia and around Nagorno-Karabakh, but this message of alarm fell on deaf ears.

Appeals from the international community have produced no results. Ilham Aliyev ignored all warnings and appeals from the international community. All this risks inevitably leading to numerous further human tragedies.

In this situation it is necessary to give a strong political message of condemnation from the international community and to adopt immediate sanctions on the country that is ignoring the international community itself.
