It happened on June 23, 1900: Delivery of the "Lightning"

22/06/14

bing in the R. Schichau shipyard takes place the delivery to the R. Marina of the destroyer Lampo, first of a class of six units.

Set the 16 Maggio 1899 at the airport with the launch of the 7 in October of the same year, it had an 320 displacement and it had an engine on four coal-fired boilers that powered two alternative triple-expansion engines for a total of 6000 hp capable of speeding up of 30 nodes.

The armament was consistent, consisting of a forward cannon from 76 / 40 mm, a caliber greater than that of the torpedo boats and five from 57 / 43 mm in single implants while the two torpedo launchers from 356 mm constituted a rather modest armament numerically but given their position on the longitudinal axis, the torpedo saver corresponded to that of similar units even of more modern construction.

Characteristic of the units of the class was the forward spur, until then adopted only for the larger units that, as far as it could appear superfluous in torpedo units, it will prove to be an excellent means of offense against the submarines in war.

The hull from the typical very refined and relatively low bow shapes on the sea will demonstrate in the exercise the tendency to stick the bow with sea in the quarters, as in all the units of the same hull form, but the inconvenience will be reduced leaving the coalman empty bowman to increase thrust.

In the test of the facts, every-time navigation, the "Lampo" showed qualities of remarkable robustness both of the hull and of the machines and of the auxiliary equipments raising the already positive degree of reliability of exercise. They also constituted - important note - the first significant and unique homogeneous group of destroyers that allowed the Regia Marina to align itself with the other main navies of the world.
