The 17 October 1916 Happened: Sunken the Nembo

17/10/14

steamship Bormida with troops on board leaves Valona for Brindisi shortly after midnight escorted by the destroyer Nembo (commander, captain of corvette Emanuele Russo) of the 5a Squadriglia.

Three miles from the coast, near the headlight of Aspri Ruga, the Austrian submarine U 16 (commander, Lieutenant Orest Ritter von Zopa) lurking in the waters off the bay of Kotor, attacks the rapidly sinking Nimbus with a torpedo.

In the action also the enemy boat sinks, according to the most probable hypothesis, for the bursting of the depth bombs of the Italian destroyer. The Nembo's losses are 32 men, including the commander, on the crew's 55; a part of the castaways will reach the coast on a boat left by the Bormida while others will be saved by the destroyer Lanciere and by the torpedo boat Centauro.

On the Austrian side two dead and 14 recovered and taken prisoner by Italian ships. The Russian commander will be decorated with a silver medal for military value.
