17 Happened August 1915: Sunk the Jalea Submarine

submarine Jalea (commander, captain of frigate Ernesto Giovannini) of the 1a Squadriglia, who had left Venice the day before for an ambush in the Gulf of Trieste, in the early hours of the afternoon, between Grado and Punta Salvore colliding with the bow a mine of a barrage not known sinking.

Of the crew of 18 men only six survivors are able to leave the boat but only one, the torpedo boat Arturo Vietri, manages to save himself to swim in Grado.

Commander Giovannini will receive the silver medal for military memory.

The wreck of the Jalea, identified ten days later by a seaplane in Venice, will be recovered in May of 1954, brought to Monfalcone and demolished there; the remains of the 12 crew members will be buried at the Redipuglia Shrine. In memory, in Monfalcone, by the citizens of 6 1954 will be erected a memorial stone.
