Part of the "Persano" program of the 1862, built at the Foce shipyard with setting up in February 1863 and launch of the 18 December 1865, it had a wooden hull and homogeneous iron armor on it, a displacement of 5814 t and was equipped with an alternative construction motor British of the power of 3670 hp, capable of imparting a speed of 13 knots.
The armament was of 17 cannons of various caliber. Overall, the two battleships represented a significant improvement over those of the "Principe di Carignano" class from which they directly derived; however the long period required by the construction, especially for the twin unit (Venice, ten years), largely depreciated their operational possibilities so much that after about a decade of service they were relegated to secondary tasks.
