6 June 1861: Camillo Benso Count of Cavour dies

Turin dies less than 51 years for badly treated malarial fever Camillo Benso count of Cavour, Prime Minister of the Royal Navy, which must be recognized a laborious weaving of the plot of the Armed Force that promised to improve as the circumstances had it allowed.

When investing to the Navy Minister, the March 17 said in reference to the fleet: "I want such ships to serve throughout the Mediterranean, that is, capable of carrying the most powerful artillery, possessing the maximum speed, containing a large amount of fuel ".

Before the disease struck him, Cavour had also found times and ways to outline the first fleet renewal program which will then be resumed and made more organic by Vice Admiral Carlo Pellion di Persano, future minister. With his death imminent, already on June 4 he was succeeded ad interim by Lieutenant General Manfredo Fanti, Minister of War, who will hold office for a week.
