03/07/15

Cruiser Flavio Gioia under the command of Captain Eugenio Grandville concludes in Spezia the longest ocean campaign carried out by a unit of the Regia Marina (four years and seven months) with a complete change of crew and staff.

[The Flavio GIOIA cruiser was launched in the construction site of Castellammare the 12 1881 in June, entered the 26 1883 in January and cleared the 10 1920 in September. With steel hull, displacement of 3064 and a motor apparatus (built by the company F. Penn of London) that developed 4156 horses, could reach the speed of 14 nodes. His activity will begin with the circumnavigation of the globe to show our flag in distant lands and to protect the national interests on the American Pacific coast and the ensign education recently released from the academy. It will end its activity just like a school ship]
