26 October 1954: Trieste returns to Italy

(To Marina Militare)

Tuesday - In the morning the first units of the Italian Navy moor in the port of Trieste (in the Grecale, Grenadier, Artillery and Duca degli Abruzzi orders) after the signing in London of the memorandum of understanding between Italy and Yugoslavia, which occurred on 5 , with which our nation was in possession of the sovereignty of the territories of what was the area closest to Trieste (Italy had lost sovereignty over the territories of Trieste 10 February 1947 with the ratification in Paris of the peace treaty.

The territories in question were divided into two zones "A" and "B" which were placed under the control, respectively, of the allies and Yugoslavia; it must be remembered that the national borders were definitively sanctioned after the Treaty of Osimo of 10 November 1975).

The people of Trieste had already experienced a similar experience in the past when the 3 November of the 1918 destroyers Audace and Grecale moored in the redeemed city at the end of the first world war (this event is witnessed by the presence of the Audace anchor at the Victory lighthouse and the assignment of the name Audace to the dock where it docked).
