25 May 1859: Garibaldi defeats the Austrians in Varese

25/05/15

en. Garibaldi simulates a prolonged stay in Arona and Meina by diverting the enemy action and attacking by surprise in Sesto Calende, where the Austrian defense was unprepared. From this we can deduce how important intelligence is.

Specifically, it is essential to have accurate and detailed information on the enemy and, at the same time, to ensure that incorrect information arrives intentionally.

Ambush: excellent planning, the result of careful study of the land, allows Garibaldi to organize an ambush by Austrian troops, rendering their numerical superiority in vain. It is easy to understand that, now as then, the knowledge of the battlefield is essential. It allows to organize offensive actions able to overturn the fates of a battle canceling the enemy numerical and / or technological advantage.

Take advantage of the favorable moment: like gen. Garibaldi knew the right moment to chase the fleeing enemy or to desist and retreat to Varese, so a good commander must know how to exploit the favorable moments of a battle to ensure victory.
