25 July 1893: Inauguration of the Corinth canal

The canal that connects the gulf of the same name to the Aegean Sea Corinth Canal was solemnly inaugurated in Corinth - cutting the relative isthmus in two allowing a drastic reduction of navigation times for those who had to make the circumnavigation of the Peloponnese.

[The canal, long 6345 m, wide 256 me deep about 8 m with the beginning of the excavations in 1881, was built on project of the Hungarian engineer B. Gerfer and completed among various vicissitudes, especially financial]
