23 May 1915: The declaration of war delivered to Austria

Vienna, the Italian ambassador Giuseppe Avarna delivers the declaration of war to the Austrian foreign minister, Baron Stefano Burian. Military operations will start at 24.00.

- The requisition of merchant ships begins.

- The Minister of the Navy is authorized to proceed until December 31 with the recruitment of the officers of the General Staff Corps. This provision subsequently (2 January 1916) will be extended to the entire war period.

- NCOs retired or on leave of CRE who have 12 or more years of actual service may be appointed up to 31 December Lieutenants of the CRE of the naval reserve in their respective categories. This provision will be later (2 January 1916) extended to the entire war period.

- Recall of retired military personnel assigned to maritime military establishments and private shipyards. - The mobile personnel of the Italian Red Cross is militarized.

- Issuing of rules and decrees concerning extraordinary measures concerning public security, the press, telegraphic, telephone and radiotelegraphic censorship.
