Italy enters the war against Austria Hungary alongside Germany.

- The Prime Minister General of Army Corps Alfonso La Marmora, called to assume the post of Chief of Staff of the Army and commander of the army corps on the Mincio, gives the presidency of the Council of Ministers to the Honorable Bettino Ricasoli; the ministry of the Navy, left by Lieutenant General Diego Angioletti destined to take command of the 8a Division, is hired by parliamentarian Agostino Depretis.

- The admiral prince Eugenio di Savoia Carignano assumes the functions of lieutenant general of the Kingdom replacing the king called to exercise from the General Quarter of Ferrara the command of the Armed Forces.

- With the incorporation of the 1845 class lever and the recalled ones, the Navy force ascends to 24.113 men; 67 are armored or ready-to-go ships (12 armored units, non-armored 12 propellers, wheeled 20, sailing 8, auxiliary 15). The Magenta corvette, currently navigating the Indian Ocean engaged in a circumnavigation journey and the units of the South American Naval Division (Regina, Ercole, Ardita and Veloce) are out of the Mediterranean.
