20 April 1897: Punitive expedition against Somali tribe

frigate captain Giorgio Sorrentino commander of the torpedo boat Elbe assisted by midshipman Massimiliano Gonzembach at the head of an 150 ward Eritrean Ascari (taken by transport Volta) undertakes from Mogadishu a punitive expedition against the Somali tribes Daùd, Udalàn and Heib Mursala responsible for the massacre of Lafolè.

The villages where various objects belonging to the expedition, with 43 dead and hundreds of wounded among the natives and the killing of the two Somali chiefs who personally gave death to the Cecchi consul, will be burned. No loss among whites and only one fallen among the ascari.

[In the ambush of Lafolè, occurred in the night between the 25 and 26 November 1896, among the dead the Italian consul and the commanders of the Ships Staffetta and Volturno; only one sub-cap and two sailors survived].
