17 May 1871: Minister Acton to protect the survivors

17/05/15

In view of the many shipwrecks with victims taking place along the national coasts, the minister Ferdinando Acton establishes a commission of experts led by the vessel captain Tommaso Bucchia with the participation of military and civilians who practice professions in the maritime field, to study and propose a coastal organization with suitable means for rescuing and rescuing survivors.

As a possible model, the minister refers to the British Royal National Lifeboat Institution, a non-governmental non-profit organization operating along the coasts of the island.

[Royal National Lifeboat Institution, founded in March 1824 as National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck and with its current name since 1854, still operates on a voluntary basis with donations and legacies].
