14 August 1873: Italian naval group in Spain in defense of compatriots

Thursday - A naval group under the command of Vice-Admiral Enrico Di Brocchetti, detached from the Permanent Squad, coming from Cagliari, gives fund in the bay of Escombreras (Cartagena). The naval group composed of the armored frigates Rome, San Martino, Venice and the Authion notice, has the mission to protect the compatriots and their possessions during the hard siege brought by the government troops against the Spanish insurgents of the "cantonal revolution" started on July 12 with street riots. Together with the Italian naval group there are a British and a French naval group.

The Italian formation that will vary in number and in the component units during the long stay in the Iberian waters, will return to Naples the 30 January 1874 after the conquest of Cartagena (13 January) by the government troops and the reestablishment of the order.
