11 March 1900: march towards the North Pole

11/03/15

: They leave the base camp and begin the march towards the 13 Pole, men of the Duke of Abruzzi's expedition, each on a sled pulled by Eskimo dogs.

An accident that occurred to Luigi di Savoia during a training march on the pack (amputation of some phalanges) at Christmas 1899 forced him to stay in the camp and to hand over the command to Umberto Cagni.

Divided into three teams led respectively by Cagni, Querini and Cavalli Mulinelli, only the first will succeed, at the limit of physical possibilities, in continuing the march.

On March 26, the second team led by Querini will take the way back but will never reach base camp, scattered on the pack; the third team led by the doctor Cavalli Molinelli, who started last on March 31st, will return after 16 days of difficult march between pain and fatigue.
