03 OCTOBER 1911: War activities against Turkey begin

Tuesday - In Tripoli, in the face of the refusal of the surrender request, handed over to the Turkish garrison the previous day and following continuous government pressure on the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to arrive at the "fait accompli", Admiral Faravelli starts the 15.45 to the bombing of the two strong guards of the port, Hamidieh (subjected to the fire of the battleship Re Umberto, Sardinia and Sicily) and Sultanieh (on the armored cruisers Garibaldi and Ferruccio), and those of the lighthouse and the pier of the port (invested from the fire of the battleship Brin).

Despite the rough sea the action is precise and the bombardment lasts until sunset. The bombing will resume the following morning, which will end in the afternoon when the Turks leave their posts. At the end, to avoid possible reprisals to the Europeans, a large landing force will be set up that will bring 5 members a day of 1732 sailors framed in two regiments who will complete the occupation of the forts and extend the land defense for 8 km. from the port.

In Tobruk, in the morning the 1a Squadra ships arrive under the command of vice-admiral Augusto Aubry (battleships Vittorio Emanuele, Naples, Rome, armored cruisers Pisa and Amalfi, ram torpedo boats Agordat and destroyer Lampo) that give the eastern end of the harbor. The commander of the Agordat, frigate captain Carlo Albamonte Siciliano, is sent to land to demand the surrender of the city. Both the commander of the Turkish garrison and the chief of the Abidat tribe take time for the answer. The following day, having received a response to the surrender order, Admiral Aubry brought the 1a Squad units into the lair, ordered the Vittorio Emanuele and Agordat to open fire on the fortifications and 400 sailors from the landing companies under the command of the frigate captain Angelo Frank (commander in 2a of Naples) to take land. These, after a brief rifle fire, take over the city and immediately afterwards the landing of the infantry is started. On the day of 5, with the arrival of a battalion of the 48 ° Infantry and a platoon of the Engineers destined to complete the occupation of the locality (transported from Naples with the steamer Favignana), half of the landing force returns on board.
