02 February 1866: The Navy's most important oceanic campaign starts

from Montevideo, where it was stationed, the Magenta propeller corvette commanded by frigate captain Vittorio Arminjon for the far more important ocean campaign that was carried out by the Navy of the new Kingdom of Italy in the first decade of its constitution.

The journey that will arouse keen interest is to be the first to circumnavigate the globe of the Regia Marina and to complete the mission entrusted to the captain of the ship who, bearing the credentials of the plenipotentiary minister, will stipulate the first treaties of friendship and trade with the Japan and with China, nations so far ignored by official Italy.

Furthermore, scientific researches and hydrographic surveys will be carried out by two zoologists-naturalists and by a preparer of artifacts loaded for the occasion. The journey will proceed from west to east and will end in Naples two years after having touched Montevideo again, crossing the Atlantic twice.
