Jorge Nieto Montesinos is the new Peruvian Minister of Defense. He replaces the outgoing Minister Gonzales Fernandez.

Nieto Montesinos was a sociologist at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, with a master's degree in Political Science from the Latin American Institute of Social Sciences (FLACSO) and a PhD in Social Sciences at the Colegio de Mexico.

He was President of the International Center for Democratic Culture and Director of the Global Governance Unit of UNESCO. As a lecturer in various universities in Latin America and Europe, he often focuses on the current Peruvian policy and more generally on that of the countries of South America. In this regard he is the author of several books.

At the same time, the Peruvian Defense communicated the data concerning expenditure in 2017, which undergoes a reduction compared to the previous year, roughly approaching the expenditure allocated in 2015 (in 2009 Peru spent 1,1% of GDP on armaments ).

The reduction of the Defense budget by around 133 million dollars at the current exchange rate is accompanied by a global review of purchases made in the previous administration. Investigations are underway to detect any serious irregularities.

As for the increase in spending, on the other hand, concerning the Ministry of the Interior, we are witnessing an increase that falls within the electoral promises of President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, whose priority is the security policy of citizens.
