Stefano Ometto: The shadows of ORCHID

Stefano Ometto

pp. 226

In a future that is not entirely hypothetical, nor too remote, Italy is devastated by cataclysms and partially flooded due to the definitive rising of the seas. It is governed by a president and a group of hierarchs of somewhat questionable moral skills and qualities.

The country has remained cut off from the rest of the world and from the life of international organizations. Completely deindustrialized, he is forced to adopt a sweetened form of self-sufficiency, where what is lacking is obtained by resorting to illegal trade. The resources strictly necessary for daily life are largely administered in the form of government subsidies, rarely sufficient, obtained through the sale of the national cultural heritage abroad, a good now considered useless.

In this environment poor in initiative and lacking in morals, the events of Orchidea and her little brother unfold who, it will turn out, are gifted with a particular talent, a sort of telepathy, but perhaps more a real empathy, towards animals, to starting with a mighty dog, who will be their watchful escort. Orchidea is an intelligent girl, with a strong character and a strong tendency to solve problems on her own.

Unexpectedly, those who previously could have been their worst enemies will get the little protagonists out of trouble.

Stefano Ometto's first work is a flowing tale, which sees, together with the events of Orchidea and his friends, the power struggles of a political leadership as violent as it is ignorant, apparently far from our times, develop in the background. But not too much, to think about it a little with a correct dose of healthy pessimism.

I go no further in revealing the plot the plot. I can only invite you to read, with the suggestion to imagine the story as if you were watching a good film.
