Sanremo: a lost opportunity in the war against the mafia?

Yes, you read that correctly: in Sanremo, was an opportunity lost in the war against the mafias? We will come out of the chorus (it is appropriate to say it), but what Saviano said, guest during the third evening of the Italian Music Festival and author of a monologue on the subject, is, after all, "taken for granted", in the sense that, although no one can deny the importance of remembering, in particular, Falcone and Borsellino almost thirty years after their killing, it is equally true that, to fully honor their memory, it could have been and, perhaps, had to , do and say more.

Meanwhile, instead of the aforementioned or, perhaps, next to it, it could have been called a Last Captain (moreover, what he himself reported about the moment of the arrest of Totò Riina is famous, when the latter had to ask him "Who are you? Who is sending you? " and he to answer "They send us Falcone and Borsellino") or relatives of mafia victims (I am thinking of a Rita Dalla Chiesa, daughter of General Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, prefect of Palermo in one of the hottest periods in the war in Cosa Nostra), or perhaps the same family members of the agents of the many escorts who were killed in the ambushes over the years.

Perhaps, their testimonies would have been equally, or who knows, more, important, because they would have described the point of view of those who, in various ways, contributed, with sacrifice and, often, with blood, to the war against the mafias, often remaining in the shadows and, therefore, it yes, condemned to a life sentence of great pain: perhaps, the Italians would have liked to listen to the sacrifices of a wife, a boyfriend, a son or a daughter, a parent, of one of the many escort agents killed, the sacrifices made, in silence, when their loved one was alive, and the pain, in fact, and the resilience of when he died. A different perspective, perhaps, which would have brought the people even closer to the cause, which today is instead experienced as something "distant" or as a battle "of others". On the other hand, if we do not talk about it, it is normal for the problem to move away from collective attention.

Or, perhaps, to want to be provocative in a certain sense, a collaborator of justice could have been invited, to explain the importance of wanting to change your life and to fight those who, up to that moment, made you a slave. Or, again, a witness of justice, to explain the importance (excuse the repetition) of the complaint, with the relative consequences. It is important to remember Rita Atria, young and courageous, indeed, a witness of justice, of course, but this could have been combined with the direct account of those who live, or have lived, certain situations, and not through intermediaries: it would have been - who knows - more "Felt" by the Italian people.

Secondly, perhaps at least a mention could be made of the ethnic mafias which, by now, are an intrinsic aspect of the more general problem. All criminal organizations of the mafia type, nowadays, have a transnational character and operate in conjunction, sometimes even very close, with each other, mutually nourishing their shady business.

Avoiding this aspect means not addressing the issue in the right way, perhaps in the name of politically correct or "politically fashionable": ignoring, for example, that one of the most powerful mafias in the world today is the Nigerian one. , certainly not good for general discussion. And omitting that it, in Italy, is among the most rooted and dangerous, means not correctly framing the whole phenomenon which, in fact, today can no longer be considered as watertight compartments, but in a globalized way.

This, of course, would also have wanted to underline the fact that one of the ways through which the aforementioned crime reaches Italy is that of irregular and uncontrolled immigration, as often underlined by Antimafia Investigation Directorate and by the intelligence apparatuses: a subject that, in fact, seems taboo to address it, thanks to a certain policy, in some ways, and the fear of being accused of racism or incitement to hatred, for others. Blatantly ignoring that the first victims of these other mafias are the Nigerians themselves, in the case of the Nigerian one, the Albanians, the Romanians and the Chinese in the case of the Albanian, Romanian and Chinese ones.

And, again: you could launch from that stage, the invitation to a Parliament that, a few days earlier, had certainly not shone on the occasion of the election of the President of the Republic, to hurry up to intervene, and in the best possible way, on the The subject of life imprisonment, on which, as the experts on the subject will recall, the Constitutional Court will return to rule in May.

The latter, last year, had in fact been referred to the issue of constitutional legitimacy, with reference to articles 3, 27 and 117 of the Constitution, of articles 4-bis paragraph 1 e 58-ter of law no. 354 of 1975, and of the art. 2 d. I. no. 152 of 1991, converted, with amendments, into law no. 203 of 1991, "in the part where exclude than the sentenced to life imprisonment, to crimes committed making use of the conditions set out in art. 416-bis cod. pen. that is to in order to facilitate the activities of associations provided therein, that has not collaborated with justice, can be admitted to parole ", and, as mentioned, he had to postpone his decision to May of this year, precisely to allow the Legislator to intervene on the point, trying to better reconcile some principles that, effectively, with the discipline in question risk, in terms of law , to enter into tension.

May is upon us and, perhaps, it would have been useful to launch this appeal, to be more concrete: because the dismantling of this institute could mean the loss of collaborations (valued by Falcone and Borsellino themselves, as well as by others), who have proved, however, very useful in contrasting the mafias (including - just think - ethnic ones).

It will be said: but Sanremo is the music festival, not a university classroom or other place where you can say and / or do all this. It certainly is. But it is also true that if, despite the context, one decides to talk about such an important topic there, then perhaps it could have been done, at that point, also in the way said. The time and the way, if desired, would be found.
