The Pentagon has approved the entry into service of the new 60mm grenade, significantly more powerful than the standard versions. The Joint Munitions Command has already authorized the use of the M1061 grenade made by Orbital ATK Inc for all departments of the US army.
The M1061 implements improved fragmentation technology with advanced Lethality Enhanced Ordnance features that increase wide-range effects over conventional heads. The goal of the program was to enhance the effectiveness of the 60mm grenade by improving its characteristics. The matrix of the M1061 consists of pre-formed fragments and the explosive PBXN-110. The lethality achieved by the M1061 is similar to that provided by the 81mm grenades.
During the early stages of development, Orbital ATK produced more than 12.000 M1061 grenades for the United States Army and its partners. A thousand grenades had already been distributed previously to the US fighting units.
