Immediately after his first patrol in the Mediterranean, the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov will return to the construction site for modernization interventions. Work will begin within the first quarter of the 2018, a year later than previously stated by the Russian Ministry of Defense. This is confirmed by the United Shipbuilding Corporation.

The ship will remain on site for three years. In the 2021 he will return to the sea. The contract with the United Shipbuilding Corporation, worth several billion rubles, has been signed. Nevskoye Design Bureau projects validated.

Work on the carrier will mainly affect the flight deck, including the replacement of the covering and the entire take-off and landing system. The heavy missile aircraft carrier cruiser, uses the Short Take Off But Arrested Recovery or STOBAR system for take-off and landing of aircraft.

Built at the Mykolaiv Sud Shipyard (now Ukraine) in the mid-80 years, the Admiral Kuznetsov became fully operational only in the 1995, due to the drastic cuts in the Russian Defense budget following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The ship, designed to hit large surface targets and protect sea routes from enemy attacks, is capable of carrying a maximum of 52 fixed and rotary wing aircraft. The boarded aircraft group includes Su-25 UTG, Su-33 (Flanker-D), MiG-29K / KUB and Ka-27 and Ka-29 helicopters.

Before reaching the Mediterranean, the aircraft carrier was under repair for ten months at the 82 shipyard in Roslyakovo, in the Murmansk region. The Admiral Kuznetsov underwent work on the electro-mechanical equipment and some components of the ship's transmission were replaced.
