Trapani: the Birgi military airport runway reopens

(To air Force)
13/12/17

In spite of the bad weather of the last few weeks, extraordinary maintenance work has been completed according to schedule, at the military airport of Trapani Birgi, home of the 37 ° Stormo.
The five-week closure period was the minimum necessary for the completion of the asphalt reconstruction work on some junctions and for the safety of the runway heads, which since yesterday, Sunday 10 December, are back to being fully operational. Further work on the construction of horizontal signs will continue for a few weeks but will be conducted without creating any limitation to commercial traffic in order to minimize the impact on the Trapani community.

The coordination, started last May, with AIRGEST, ENAC and the Prefecture of Trapani, has reduced the inconvenience to a minimum, ensuring the continuity of the normal operations of Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (helicopter rescue of 118).

Throughout the period of work, the Air Force continued to operate with its aircraft from the secondary runway, which in size can only be used by the military, ensuring the airspace surveillance service with the Eurofighter fighters of the XVIII Group and the service of search and rescue with helicopters HH-139A of 82 ° CSAR Center (Combat Search and Rescue), activities essential for the defense and security of the country.

For the conduct and execution of the works the Aeronautica Militare has made use of the specialized articulations of its Logistic Command coming from different locations of the Country, using all the available resources for the maximum time reduction of the works, allowing the return to normal as soon as possible airport operations, reflecting the strong bond that the 37 ° Stormo has with the territory and the whole population.
