Emergency transport for an infant of 4 days

13/04/15

Yesterday a newborn of just four days suffering from a serious pathology and admitted to the Neonatology Department of the University Hospital of Monserrato (Cagliari) was transferred urgently to the Pediatric Hospital 'Bambin Gesù' in Rome.

The request for transportation, which was necessary to guarantee the small patient immediate specialist medical care, sent from the hospital to the Prefecture of Cagliari, was received at the Situation Hall of the General Staff of the Air Force that ordered the execution of the flight.

The aircraft, a 50 Falcon 31 ° Stormo of Ciampino (Rome) landed at the airport "Mario Mameli" of Elmas-Cagliari during the night and immediately returned to the capital.

The newborn, who was lodged in a special thermal cradle, accompanied by his father and assisted during the flight by the Policlinico medical staff, was later transported with an ambulance to the Roman hospital.

Boarding at Elmas airport required the use of the “ambulift”, a special lifting equipment made available by the airport company of the Cagliari airport (Sogaer).

The aircraft of the 31 ° Stormo di Ciampino are used for state transport and for public utility missions, such as the emergency medical transport of the sick, severely traumatized and organs for transplants, as well as for interventions in favor of people in situations risk. This last activity, given the imminent danger to life of the people transported, requires a level of readiness twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
