A civil aircraft of the ATR42 type with 26 people on board in an emergency is forced to make an emergency ditching, following a breakdown.

This is the scenario simulated last 19 in May during a joint exercise between Coast Guard, Air Force, Fire Department, Guardia di Finanza and Penitentiary Police, carried out in the stretch of sea in front of Castiglioncello (LI).

The purpose of the exercise, called "Airsubsarex 2015" was to verify and possibly improve the procedures to be undertaken in the event of events such as an emergency ditching of an aircraft.

At the same time, the occasion was propitious for the men of the Air Force (pilots and on-board operators belonging to the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa), to train themselves in survival techniques and in the use of emergency equipment in case of ditching .

The Air Force has in fact provided, together with the Italian Red Cross, the "survivors" to be recovered on board the rescue boat that is used by the crews in this type of emergency situation.

The naval units of the Coast Guard, Fire Department, Guardia di Finanza and Penitentiary Police participated in the recovery of the "castaways". An AB-412 helicopter of the 1ª Air Section Helicopters of the Coast Guard of Sarzana Luni (SP) carried out the recovery to the winch and transport to the care facilities.

The activity carried out in the exercise is the result of training that is carried out by the Air Force with theoretical lessons on techniques, materials, psychological and health aspects; the simulated event allows a practical phase in which the personnel, under the supervision of a survival instructor and salvation swimmers, experiences the difficulties resulting from an emergency ditching, exercising the techniques and the tricks for survival.
