Late yesterday evening a helicopter AB-212 80 Center Combat SAR (Search and Rescue) of Decimomannu (Ca), belonging to the 15 ° Stormo dell'Aeronautica Militare, helped a passenger in imminent danger of life that was aboard the Costa Fascinosa cruise ship, sailing about 50 miles southwest of the Sardinian coast.

The rescue was coordinated by the Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) of the Air Operations Command (COA) of Poggio Renatico (FE).

The crew in alert readiness took off from the military airport of Decimomannu at 22: 00 approximately, with on board a medical team of the "Brotzu" Hospital of Cagliari. After about an hour of flight, the helicopter reached the ship and so began the recovery operations of the man through a stretcher with the winch. Once the boarding operations were completed, the helicopter headed to the "Brotzu" in Cagliari where the man was assigned to the medical care of the hospital.

More than two hundred flight hours have been carried out by the Air Force since the beginning of the year with its aircraft in emergency medical transport, search and rescue for the community. About one fifth of these concern rescue activities carried out in Sardinia.
