Afghanistan: attack on the Save the Children compound in Jalalabad

(To Save the Children)
24/01/18

We are devastated by the news of the attack on the Save the Children office in the city of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, where a group of armed men broke into our compound this morning. The attack took place around the local 9 hours, the dawn in Italy.

Our first concern is the safety of our staff. We are waiting to receive more information from our team and, considering that the situation is still evolving, we are not currently able to provide further information.

Save the Children works in Afghanistan from 1976 in 16 of the 34 provinces of the country. The organization carries out projects for the protection of children, education, health and nutrition projects, interventions to counteract and prevent the poverty of families and children, and response to emergencies, thanks to which we reach over 700.000 children.

H13.29 UPDATE:

Save the Children confirms that the attack against its office in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, is still ongoing. Our primary concern remains to guarantee the safety of all our staff. As a result, all our programs in Afghanistan have been temporarily suspended and our offices have been closed.

Afghanistan - underlines Save the Children, the international organization that strives to save the lives of children and guarantee their future by the 1919 - is one of the countries in the world where it is harder to be children and where humanitarian workers work in particularly difficult conditions complicated. With our humanitarian operations in Afghanistan, we have reached almost 1,4 million children. We are committed to resuming our operations and our work to save human lives as quickly as possible, as soon as we are assured of operating safely.
