Vincenzo Di Tommaso: What it means to be a Leader

ommaso Ed. on its own (ilmiolibro.it) pp. 102 I read with interest the book by Vincenzo Di Tommaso, "What it means to be a leader", partly out of professional curiosity, partly because it is a subject I care very much about and on which, sooner or later, I will also try my hand.

With this essay the author explains with simple words the meaning of the term "leader", the differences that exist between leader, manager and leader, analyzing the different theories on leadership and highlighting the qualities that must have a military commander.

"The term leader [..] is an English word, derived from the verb" to lead "(to lead, to direct, to guide), in Italian its meaning is similar to that of" guide ", understood as that which directs towards a goal determined. "

A relatively simple definition, but hides inside a series of questions on which it is good to reflect, especially if you are going to approach your military career:

- What is the meaning of terms such as "power" and "authority"?

- What qualities should a leader have to be regarded as such by his men?

- What are the qualities that a leader must develop, within the military organization, to achieve the set goals?

The author, however, does not stop at the meaning of leadership but goes further, analyzing inter alia what is commonly called "stress" and how a leader must deal with it. Stress, in fact, is an essential component of the commander's life, a component that must be known and best managed on every occasion.

In the rest of the book the author focuses on the military leader, the importance of motivation, training, peace operations and the figure of the commander.

The rest ... I leave the reader the possibility to find out for himself, I just add that "What it means to be a leader" is a good book, interesting and instructive, which can not miss in the library of a military and an officer in particular.

Book that I recommend to the cadets of the Academies for the many food for thought that can be found there.

Happy reading.
