Guglielmo Marconi tests are carried out in the waters of Spezia with positive results of radiotelegraphic transceiver with the battleship San Martino (commander, captain of vessel Enrico Zino) with connections maintained up to 18.000 m.
The trials that will last two days, and which had no precedent in the experiments conducted by Marconi himself in Great Britain, demonstrated the possibility, until then doubted, of receiving Hertzian waves even in the magnetic environment of iron ships. Furthermore, on the basis of the results achieved in these tests, the installation of the first radiotelegraph devices, on board and on the ground, will be started by all the great nations, with the aim of collecting all the elements useful for their application in the reports maritime. Following the positive results achieved, the ministry will have the installation of radio equipment on the Trinacria and on battleships Sicilia e Sardinia mainly for experimental and personnel training purposes and will also be provided with the construction of terrestrial radiotelegraph stations (the first will be those on the islands of Palmaria and Gorgona and in Livorno).
[The first ground-edge radiotelegraphic experiment in Morse code was successfully completed on 14 between the transmitter (an antenna of 25 meters) positioned in the San Bartolomeo shipyard and the receiver on board the tugboat N. 8.. The connection is maintained up to a distance of 12.700 m.]
